Danesfield Girl IRE 1350

Star of Ower was born in 1936. She was black with a blaze and a height at 13.3 hh. She has no pedigree recorded in the Irish stud book, but under her daughter Star of Leam, it is noted that she is by the stallion Noble Star. Neither Star of Leam nor her sister Moycullen Lady made any significant contribution to the Connemara breed. Star of Leam had no offspring and Moycullen Lady only a few in the USA. Since they are the only progeny of Star of Ower that can be found in the Irish stud book it seems like this mare family is facing an abrupt end before it has even begun, but a link through can be found in the first issue of the Swedish stud book. Here it is suggested that Star of Ower was also the dam of Danesfield Girl. I haven't been able to find any supporting evidence, but it is of minor importance for the family as neither of the two documented daughters of Star of Ower has given any major branches of the family. Let us thus not worry about the possible link between Star of Ower and Danesfield Girl and just call this family Danesfield Girl's.

Going through the Connemara litterature it's not very common to stumble over references to Danesfield Girl's mare family. It has nowhere near the same reputation and successes as the Windy family, the Sparrow family or the descendants of Callowfeenish Dolly. Still, looking a little closer will reveal a family where many of the members have done well, perhaps primarily as performers, but also in the show ring.

Danesfield Girl has 13 foals recorded in the Irish stud book, 12 fillies and a gelding. The oldest, Winter Flower, was born already in 1949 when Danesfield Girl was a two-year-old, so perhaps the years should be taken with a pinch of salt. Winter Flower was exported to the USA, but hasn't left any traces there. It was instead with daughter number three that the family took off. Carna Jenny was exported to Britain where she was the dam of among others Siona of Calmore who came to Sweden, but was never entered in the Swedish studbook. Another daughter of Carna Jenny was Clementine who became a brood mare at the Gatcombe stud. Her son Gatcombe Corvette was at the to of the Brittish Performance Award Scheme in 1996. Another son of Clementine, the stallion Gatcombe Chevron, was exported to Austria.

The next of Danesfield Girl's daughters, Morning Mist, was exported to the USA. She didn't have all too many foals over there, but a son, the stallion Bar Bar A's Kilkerrin Paddy won in 1981 the American Connemara society's An Tostal trophy, awarded to successfully competing stallions.

From Ower Girl, the next of Danesfield Girl's daughters, comes a strong branch of the family through Ower Girl's daughter Fort Lady. Fort Lady's son, Fort Doolin, was champion at the 1981 Clifden show and subsequently exported to France. There he sired among others the Belgian Galibot d'Enfer who has been champion at the Belgian breed show and competed in the European show jumping pony championships. In France Six Pence Duff has been champion and Vent Fou Duff has been reserve champion at the breed show.

One of Fort Lady's daughters, Fort Helen, also went to France. As a two-year-old she won her class at Clifden show and in 1976 she won the class for older mares at Salon de Cheval. From her a long line of performance ponies descends, or how about the following list where all have competed in the French championships: Ursinor ar Crano (eventing, 5th), Imperial du Blin (show jumping, 5th), Holy Island Aluinn (show jumping, 10th), Hors Pair (show jumping, 7th) och Joyau d'Argent (show jumping, 6th). Other descendants of Fort Helen who have distinguished themselves in the ridden field are Sonner ar Crano, Gavroche Bruere, Kilkenny Aluinn and the young ponies Lover de Vauper and Mauve de la Lande. As icing of the cake we also have Fort Helen's grandson Mealow de la Belle who was youngstock champion at the 2003 French breed show.

The next Fort Lady daughter, Fort Ruby, stayed in Ireland. Her daughter Fort Laura was instead sold to Britain and became a brood mare at the Millfields stud and in 1980 she won her class at the British breed show. Among her descendants are a long line of in hand winner such as Millfields Festival, champion foal in 1977, Millfields Falcon, winning gelding in 1987, and through her grand and great grandsons Millfields Troubatour and Millfields Fanfare: Millfields Galland, winning gelding in 1992 and 1998, and Millfields Snow Falcon, reserve youngstock champion in 2004. Among the ridden successes are the Troubadore progeny, Millfield Sonnet, reserve ridden champion at the Eastern Counties show in 2004 and Millfield Fiesta's son Fenrose Chester, approved stallion and winner of the stallion class at the 1995 breed show, but later gelded and twice qualifying to the Mountain and Moorland ridden finals at Olympia. From Fort Laura the tracks also lead on to other countries through the Australian export Millfields Cabin Boy and the Finnish export Millfields Fenella.

Among the offspring of Fort Ruby are yet a few that deserves a mentioning. The stallion Fort Gernion who after a short stop-over in Denmark continued to the Netherlands where he sired the Ster-mare Van de Arenbosch Gitta and Rory Ryan who was the best foal at the Belgian breed show in 2001 and Fort Gernion also have succesful show jumpers in the US. A full brother of Fort Laura by the name of Grey Glimmer came to Sweden, but I haven't been able to trace his further story.

To round off Fort Lady her daughter mention should also be made of her daughter Fort Sheila, brood mare in France, and the stallion Fort Boffin, in Ireland the sire of among others a Clifden winner, the 1983 winning filly foal, and the stallion Brogeen. Also the last two Ower Girl's progeny, both full siblings of Fort Lady, deserves a few short words. The gelding Ower Pat was exported to Sweden and his sister Tara was sold to France where she has offspring with the suffix du Canisy.

Two of Danesfield Girl's daughters came to be exported to Sweden. Dun Girl, the oldest, came to Sweden already in 1966 as one of the earliest Connemaras in the country, and she was entered in the stud book as number 6. In Ireland she already had the daughter Lambay Girl whos daughter Vinca was exported to France. In France Vinca was the dam on the stallion Quartz de Vauptin, who in turn among others sired Boumrang, fifth at the 2001 French eventing championships. Dun Girl's first Swedish-born foal was the daughter Wänga Sherry. Born in 1966 she was shown 23 years old, in the "vintage" class at the 1989 breedshow where she was second. Three of Sherry's progeny have competed in show jumping: Censation, Janci and Napoleon III and Censation's daughter To Late has competed in dressage. Two of Wänga Sherry's sisters have also done their part in the jumping arena: Brunett and Florett. Brunett has also been a brood mare and given birth to the next generation of jumpers with ponies like Rosita, Saloma and Sorina II. Rosita is in turn the mother of the dressage pony Silfverrose Thunder. Florett too is the dam of a jumping pony, the gelding Favorit.

Dun Girl's half sister Danesfield Diamond came to Sweden the year after Dun Girl herself. Among her offspring are the part bred, Dairymaid, who has done some show jumping. Purebred Djufwanäs Debut and Djufwanäs Diorit have been second and first respectively in the breed show classes for over-heights, with a gold and an impressive 43 points to Diorit.

The next Danesfield Girl-descendant to reach Sweden was her granddaughter Copper Gleam whocame here in 1972. Also from her and her daughter Krikas Copelia we have show jumping ponies: Corint, Copernicus and the part bred Get Me. A half-sister to Copper Gleam, Tolka Bridge stayed in Ireland. She's the dam of among others the stallions Cloon-Eile Cashel, Clifden winner in 2002 and 2004 and Currachmore Cashel, reserve youngstock champion at Clifden in 2003 and reserve champion in 2005. I'll let Tolka Bridge's daughter Lisheen Star bring the family to a close. Her son Lakeview Lad has been exported to Sweden where he, perhaps not entirely surprising, is going for a carreer as a show jumping pony.

Daphne has two more foals. It seems the only of Daphne's foals to be registred was Suzuki, who had a foal called Siska (also registred). Suzuki was first, that foal was born the same year as I bought Daphne, 1972, from Wilkesback, an arabian stud outside of Falun. With me Daphne had Salvador Dali (colt) 1973, bu Wielki Ess, an arabian stallion at Wilkesbacka. Foal number two came a couple of years later and was called Didou (filly), she probably also had an arabian sire, as Daphne was covered at Wilkesbacka again.
